SmartThings You’ve Got Mail through Sonos Speakers when Mailbox Opened

So I had a few Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor’s laying around and decided to put one of them to good use.

I wanted my mailbox when it was opened to alert me that the mail was delivered and what better way then to use the AOL Sound “You’ve Got Mail”.  At first I did this just screwing around but then I realized how useful this actually became.  I never have to keep checking the mailbox waiting for mail to arrive.  I can continue on with my day waiting for the “You’ve Got Mail” sound to carry out through about 6 Sonos speakers.

Step 1.  First things first you need to login to your SmartThings IDE (link).

Step 2.  Make sure you click on “My Locations” then the Location name mine is “Home“.

Step 3.  Next we need to add a Custom SmartApp.  So click on “My Smartapps” at the top of your screen and then choose the green button “New Smart App“.

Step 4.  Then choose “From Code“.

Step 5.  Copy and Paste the entire code snippet below.  Then choose “Save” and then “Publish”.

Step 6.  Now launch the SmartThings app on your Android device.  And choose “Marketplace“.

Step 7.  Then choose “SmartApps” at the top.

Step 8.  Now choose “My Apps” at the bottom.

Step 9.  Now choose the Custom Smart App we added in the IDE earlier.  “Sonos_Mailbox_Notify”.

Step 10.  Here’s where you can configure everything.  So I have mine setup so when the “Contact” opens of Mailbox it will sound the “You’ve got Mail” sound throughout my selected Sonos Speakers.  You can also switch this so it only Plays once per day, or during selected time frame.

Connecting Pebble 2 HR to Samsung Galaxy Note 8

I’ve used almost every single Smartwatch to date.  I honestly have been disappointed with almost everyone from being bulky, horrible battery life, lack of Samsung apps, etc.  The first Smartwatch I owned was the first gen Pebble.  Loved it.  I decided to go back and purchase the Pebble 2 HR (Heart Rate).  It has a lithium ion battery which should hold a charge between 5-7 days for this watch it also only takes about an hour to fully charge.

If you are trying to connect your Pebble 2 to your Samsung Galaxy Note 8, it just won’t work.  At first I thought I received a bad Pebble 2 so I returned it back to Amazon.  I received the new one 2 days later same error message.  It seem’s the device would get stuck on 63% of an update then just update failed.  I tried everything from resetting the watch, holding down the bottom right button it just doesn’t work.  Then I thought it was my Galaxy Note 8 device so I decided to try my wife’s Note 8.  Same exact problem.

When you get the Pebble 2 it seem’s its in some factory state and needs to download the latest firmware version.  Here’s how I was able to finally get my Note 8 connected to my Pebble 2 HR.  Hopefully you have an extra device laying around I did I had a cracked Note 5, so I powered it on an downloaded the Pebble app.  I let the smartwatch do its update and Viola!  The Pebble 2 HR was finally updated to the latest version.  I turned off my old device, went to the Pebble App on my Galaxy Note 8 and it was connected without a problem.

What a pain in the ass.  Hopefully this helps others that are having the same issue.

PC BattleStations | The Best Products for Cable Management

If there is anything I hate the most it’s computer cable management.  It’s just awful even for me I’m constantly changing the way my computers setup and the layout of the room.  So i’m always adding and removing cables.  The first thing you must have is patients don’t rush your cable management or your just going to end up re-doing it again in a few weeks.

The first thing I did when I started my build was purchase my desk.  I purchased it from Ikea and wanted something to hide the cables behind it.  I needed something long because my desk consists of (2) desk’s added together.  Anyways here is everything I used for my cable management and hopefully it will help others with their computer builds.

This was a 2 pack it worked perfect because I have 2 of the same desks put together.  This came with 3M tape that was very strong it was a little longer then I needed so i took out my dremel cutter and easily cut the excess away.  If you had to or wanted to you could easily drill in the bottom of this to make sections for shorter runs.

When I was using dual monitors this was a must.  Recently I updated to a 34 ultra wide screen because I really didn’t need a dual monitor setup anymore.  I constantly see people running dual monitors on the stand if you want to maximize desk space and have a clean sleek build.  This will support (2) monitors up to 27″ each.

Another great product instead of always using zipties to minimize my exposed cables.  I came across this cable management sleeve.  It’s still sometimes  a pain because I’m always adding and removing new gadgets so I have to keep unzipping to remove/add something.  Still beats cutting zip-ties and the look is excellent!

IKEA – SIGNUM Cable management

This product also helped me out, it hung down a little more then i liked it to but overall it did the trick.  I was able to mount (2) power strips on the inside then wrap all the excess cables under my desk that I did not want to be seen.  I even mounted an external hard drive, and USB 3.0 hub all inside this.
